July Parent Update

posted Jul 23, 2020, 11:54 AM by Greg Williams

This summer certainly has been like no other in my experience.  We are working hard to stay abreast of all changes in health conditions, orders, and guidelines as they apply to Ohio schools in general and Montgomery County schools specifically.

Please be sure to keep monitoring your email and the New Lebanon School District website for updates.  We plan to provide parents with revisions to our Reopen and Stay Open plan as soon as we can as conditions change.

We hope that everyone is enjoying a healthy summer.

Remote Learning

Our Reopen and Stay Open plan includes an option for parents to select remote learning rather than in-person learning for their child(ren) if parents determine that in-person learning is not a good option given their individual circumstances.  The link to complete the remote learning application can be found near the top of the district website home page.

A child that is enrolled in remote learning must stay in remote learning through the end of the quarter.  The family may elect to move the child to in-person learning during the following quarter if desired.

Remote learning will be provided through a partnership with companies that specialize in online learning.  Plato will be used in grades 7-12 and has been used at Dixie High School for a number of years to provide students with online instruction.  Schools PLP will be used in grades K-6.  SchoolsPLP is available through a partnership with Montgomery County ESC and features strong alignment with Ohio Learning Standards.  Our administrators will be able to monitor student progress in both systems and school representatives will be checking in with families often.

Welcome Back Night

Given the current health circumstances in Ohio, in-person Welcome Back Night activities may not be advisable on August 17th.  We are currently working on an alternative plan for Welcome Back Night—please continue to monitor your email and the district website for updates.

Parents Against Vaping

Parents Against Vaping E-cigarettes, also known as PAVe, is a national organization that was founded as a response to the youth vaping epidemic. PAVe understands the importance of starting conversations about addiction with youth and creating an open dialogue to discuss these important issues in their lives. On August 12th PAVe is hosting an Ohio specific webinar to talk through these topics that parents need to know to help kids avoid or quit using dangerous flavored e-cigarettes.

Fall Sports

Strength, skill, and conditioning optional workouts are currently underway for fall sports.  Out athletic trainer and coaches are implementing and monitoring health protocols for our athletes to minimize potential transmission of germs.

Most fall sports will begin official practice on August 1st.  Please contact Mr. Rhodus at trhodus@newlebanonschools.org if you would like more information about any of our school sports.

Facial Coverings

The current version of the New Lebanon Reopen and Stay Open plan requires all students in grades 3 through 12 to bring a facial covering to school to wear on the bus and if the student were to develop symptoms of COVID 19.  In addition, students in grades 3 through 12 are currently required to wear a facial covering or a face shield during most routine parts of the school day including in the classroom, during transitions times and other times when social distancing is not possible.

Please begin to have your child(ren) become accustomed to facial coverings in preparation for school if they have not had much experience this summer.

Facial coverings have been shown to reduce transmission of COVID 19 and will help students/staff stay healthy and increase the likelihood that schools can stay open during the pandemic.  We appreciate the support of our parents as we work to get students back to school in August.
